We Did It

Ben Dhiman replays his UTMB victory six days after the finish, starting with the strange emptiness of the wait before the start, forty minutes before runners are even allowed under the arch, a coffee begged off his ASICS crew to shake the sleepiness, and a start line where he felt moderately stressed, impatient and completely in control. He describes the race as a rocket ship: a first stage below four-minute pace, the opening climb in a big group beside his training partner, and a check of the sensations on the first descent, because what he wants on race day is not new legs but familiar ones. Charging out of Les Contamines in front turns out to be the decisive move, and the tactical night he had planned becomes 140 kilometres alone, including a mandatory red-bulb headlamp section where he could see almost nothing and simply trusted his feet. He takes easy time on the runnable descents, reaches Courmayeur seventeen minutes up, breaks a pole, force-feeds himself and climbs Grand Col Ferret, the place that destroyed him in 2025, into the sunrise. His crew at La Fouly tells him to slow down, 125 kilometres in. He is weak on Bovine and Flégère but doubles his sugar intake at Trient, hammers one more descent and is carried up the last climb by the crowd, finishing in 18:16:29, the fastest time ever run at UTMB. He closes on the year behind it, threading a growing family through a growing training load, and on a win he insists is not his but theirs.
